A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Breaking Through a Wall Long Island City Queens NY

This video shows the break-through of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for Tunnel “A” of the East Side Access project in Long Island City, Queens.

It finished its drive back in 12/26/2011 when it reached its receiving pit destination as seen in this video.

Tunnel “A” will eventually convey trains westbound into the LIRR’s new Grand Central Terminal, GCT.

This TBM began its work back on August 10, 2011, mining through hard rock, boulders, gravel, sand and clay.

It was disassembled, loaded onto flat bed trucks and transported to 29-76 Northern Boulevard in Long Island City, where it was re-assembled and again began mining Tunnel “D” which will carry trains eastbound from the new Grand Central Terminal.

Upon completion of ESA there will be four new tunnels providing service to GCT.
